네? 싫다고요…? 토트넘, 감독들이 피하는 구단이 됐다

토트넘 홋스퍼가 새 감독을 구하려고 하는데 참 쉽지가 않습니다. 토트넘은 안토니오 콘테 감독을 사실상 경질한 뒤 크리스티안 스텔리니 코치를 감독 대행으로 선임했습니다. 결과는 실패였습니다. 콘테 감독 체제에서는 그래도 UEFA 챔피언스리그 진출 경쟁을 펼쳤는데 그 이후에는 성적이 뚝뚝 떨어졌습니다. 스텔리니 감독 체제에서는 뉴캐슬전 참사가 발생했고 바로 계약을 해지했습니다. 그리고 현재 라이언 메이슨 감독 대행이 팀을 이끌고 있습니다.

이제 토트넘은 새로운 감독을 구해야 하는데 언급되는 감독마다 거절, 재계약 등 토트넘을 거부하고 있습니다.

일단 토트넘은 아르너 슬롯 페예노르트 감독을 노렸습니다. 그런데 이 소식이 나오자마자 2026년까지 재계약을 체결했습니다. 슬롯 감독은 “페예노르트에서의 일이 아직 끝나지 않았다. 그동안 쏟은 노력의 보상으로 우승을 차지했지만 더욱 발전하고 싶다. 챔피언스리그도 치러야 하고 리그 챔피언 자리도 지켜야 한다”고 말했습니다. 토트넘 이적 대신 페예노르트 잔류를 선택했습니다.

현지 언론들에 따르면 이유는 역시 돈입니다. 슬롯 감독은 자신과 코칭스태프의 위약금 1,750만 파운드(약 290억 원)의 지불을 요청했는데 토트넘이 이를 수락하지 않았습니다. 그러는 사이 페예노르트가 더 좋은 조건의 재계약을 제안했고 이를 수락하며 슬롯 감독은 페예노르트에 잔류하게 됐습니다. 

셀틱의 안제 포르테코글루 감독도 토트넘의 영입 리스트에 올랐습니다. 하지만 역시 거절당했습니다. 포르테코글루 감독은 “나에게 가장 중요한 건 셀틱이다. 내 축구 커리어와 관련해 어떤 것도 계획한 것은 없다”라며 셀틱에 남겠다고 밝혔습니다. 현재 셀틱은 리그와 리그컵에서 우승을 차지했고 스코티시컵 결승에 올라 트레블에 도전하고 있습니다.

이외에도 율리안 나겔스만 전 바이에른 뮌헨 감독, 뱅상 콤파니 번리 감독, 사비 알론소 바이어 레버쿠젠 감독 등 다양한 감독들이 토트넘과 연결되고 있지만 모두 거절 의사를 밝히고 있습니다. 이미 감독들 사이에는 토트넘이 기피 구단이 된 것 같습니다. 과거 토트넘에서 뛰었던 라몬 베가가 토트넘에 대한 평판을 전했습니다.

베가는 “토트넘 수뇌부는 축구계가 얼마나 좁은지 잘 모르는 것 같다. 감독, 코치, 전현직 선수는 물론 에이전트까지 토트넘에 대해 이야기한다. 그들은 모두 과거와 현재에 토트넘에서 경험한 내용을 언급하며 정보를 공유하고 있다. 99% 이상이 같은 이야기를 하고 있다”며 현재 토트넘의 평판이 최악이라고 전했습니다.

무리뉴 감독도 최근 토트넘에 대해 이야기를 하면서 이와 비슷한 내용을 전했습니다. 무리뉴 감독은 “토트넘은 내가 일했던 모든 팀 중 유일하게 나와 유대감이 없는 팀이다. 내가 토트넘 감독일 때 코로나19 때문에 관중이 없었기 때문이다. 리그컵 결승전을 앞두고 다니엘 레비 회장은 나를 경질했기 때문일 수도 있다. 그래서 우승을 못했다. 난 예전 구단들과 영원히 한몸일 것이다. 레비 회장의 구단만 빼고”라고 말했습니다.
