9년 만에 5부에서 EPL 승격! 2780억 돈방석 루턴 타운의 기적

루턴 타운이라고 들어보셨나요? 저도 해외 축구를 꽤 오랜 시간 봤는데 루턴 타운이라는 팀은 정확하게 떠오르지 않았습니다. 그런데 이 팀이 프리미어리그 승격에 성공했습니다. 승격 플레이오프에서 코벤트리 시티에 승부차기까지 가는 접전 끝에 승리를 거두고 기적의 승격에 성공했습니다.

루턴 타운은 프리미어리그 출범 직전 시즌인 1991-92시즌 챔피언십(2부 리그)으로 강등된 후 단 한 번도 1부 리그로 올라오지 못했습니다. 9년 전에는 아마추어 리그인 5부 리그까지 떨어졌던 팀입니다. 이런 루턴 타운이 2014년 4부 리그 승격, 2018년 3부 리그 승격, 2019년 2부 리그 승격 그리고 2023년 1부 리그 승격에 성공했습니다. 참 대단합니다.

5부 리그에서 1부 리그까지 9년 만에 승격한 팀은 1977년과 1986년 사이의 윔블던FC 이후 처음입니다. 이제 루턴 타운은 새로운 역사를 쓰며 화려하게 프리미어리그에 입성했습니다. 프리미어리그에 올라오면 일단 많은 관심을 받는 것도 중요한데 엄청난 돈을 벌게 됩니다.

현지 언론들에 따르면 중계권료를 포함해 각종 수입으로 최소 1억 7,000만 파운드(약 2,780억 원)를 벌게 됩니다. 참고로 루턴 타운 선수들 모두가 1년 동안 받는 연봉을 합치면 782만 파운드(약 128억 원)입니다. 

또 루턴 타운은 100년이 넘은 홈 경기장 케닐워스 로드 스타디움의 보수를 계획하고 있는데 975만 파운드(약 160억 원)가 들어갈 예정입니다. 현재 경기장에는 1만 명 밖에 들어가지 않아 확장 공사가 필요합니다. 루턴 타운이 승격으로 버는 돈을 생각하면 굉장히 저렴하게 느껴집니다. 

물론 루턴 타운이 프리미어리그에 잔류하기 위해 수준급 선수들을 영입하려면 많은 돈이 필요해 보입니다. 그래도 일단 엄청난 돈을 벌 수 있기 때문에 현명한 선수 영입 및 방출이 필요해 보입니다. 루턴 타운 경영진들이 행복한 고민을 하고 있을 것 같네요.

루턴 타운의 경기장을 보면 상당히 초라합니다. 이게 입구의 모습인데 무슨 가정집 차고 같습니다. 많은 관중들이 경기장을 찾을 예정이니 제대로 꾸려야 할 것 같습니다. 

루턴이라는 지역은 런던의 북쪽 지역인데 도시 인구는 28만 명 정도로 소도시입니다. 조용한 도시인데 사상 첫 프리미어리그 참가로 흥분에 빠졌습니다. 다음 시즌 루턴 타운이 어떤 모습을 보여줄지 궁금하네요. 감사합니다.
