뉴캐슬 유나이티드가 UEFA 챔피언스리그 진출에 성공했습니다. 정말 대단합니다. 현재 3위인 뉴캐슬은 승점 70점으로 잔여 2경기 결과에 상관 없이 최소 4위 자리를 확보했습니다. 뉴캐슬의 마지막 챔피언스리그 진출은 지난 2002-03시즌입니다. 이후 무려 21년 만에 챔피언스리그 진출에 성공했습니다. 에디 하우 감독과 뉴캐슬 선수들 참 대단합니다.
뉴캐슬은 사우디아라비아 국부펀드가 팀을 인수한 뒤 조금씩 강해지기 시작했습니다. 이제 챔피언스리그에 진출했으니 이번 여름 대대적인 선수 영입이 예상됩니다. 물론 팀의 분위기를 생각해 무분별한 영입은 하지 않을 것 같고 돈이 많으니까 아마 슈퍼스타 1-2명을 영입하지 않을까 생각이 됩니다.
그럼 뉴캐슬 팬들을 포함해 현지 팬들은 뉴캐슬의 챔피언스리그 진출을 어떻게 생각하고 있을까요. 현지 팬들의 반응을 살펴봤습니다.
한 팬은 “정말 미쳤다. 불과 18개월 전 뉴캐슬은 강등을 놓고 싸우고 있었다. 누구도 이런 변화가 빠르게 올 것이라고 생각하지 못했지만 현실이 됐다. 에디 하우 감독과 이 팀은 정말 특별하다”고 말했습니다.
에브리싱 호날두라는 팬은 “이제 미스터 챔피언스리그를 영입할 시간이다”라고 말했습니다. 뉴캐슬이 챔피언스리그에 진출할 경우 호날두를 임대로 영입한다는 보도가 있었지만 하우 감독은 이를 부인한 바 있습니다.
카베야라는 팬도 “이건 호날두가 다음 시즌 뉴캐슬에서 뛴다는 걸 의미할까”라며 호날두를 언급했습니다.
모하메드라는 팬은 “21년 만에 챔피언스리그 진출은 사우디 국부펀드의 큰 성공이다”라고 평가했습니다.

알마키라는 팬은 “챔피언스리그에 진출한 뉴캐슬 팬들에게 축하의 말을 전한다. 여러분들이 첫 번째 서포터고 선수들, 감독에게 모두 감사하다. 사우디는 오늘 행복한 하루다”라고 말했습니다. 사우디 국민들에게는 뉴캐슬이 특별한 구단일 것 같네요.

Newcastle United have qualified for the UEFA Champions League. That's really great. Newcastle, currently in third place, have 70 points and secured at least a fourth place spot regardless of the outcome of the remaining two matches. Newcastle's last Champions League appearance was in the 2002-03 season. After 21 years, they succeeded in advancing to the Champions League. Coach Eddie Howe and the Newcastle players are amazing.
Newcastle started to strengthen little by little after Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund took over the team. Now that they're in the Champions League, a big wave of signings is expected this summer. Of course, considering the atmosphere of the team, I don't think I'll make indiscriminate recruitment, and since I have a lot of money, I think maybe I'll recruit 1-2 superstars.
