사우디아라비아는 현재 전 세계를 깜짝 놀라게 하고 있습니다. 엄청난 돈으로 슈퍼스타들을 영입하고 있기 때문입니다. 크리스티아누 호날두를 시작으로 카림 벤제마, 사디오 마네, 네이마르 등 유럽에서 뛸 선수들이 이제는 사우디로 향하고 있습니다. 그런데 사우디의 야심은 여기서 끝이 아닌 거 같습니다. 사우디 프로 리그가 UEFA(유럽축구연맹) 챔피언스리그에 출전할 수도 있다는 충격적인 보도가 나왔습니다.
이 보도는 영국 언론 ‘스포츠키다’에서 나왔습니다. 스포츠키다는 “사우디 축구협회가 2025년부터 UEFA 챔피언스리그 출전에 대해 허가 받기 위해 유럽축구협회와 공식적으로 대화를 나눴다. 챔피언스리그에 출전하는 구단을 결정하는 것에 대해서는 아직 알려지지 않았는데 리그 우승 팀이 나갈 것으로 예상된다. 하지만 팬들은 유럽이 아닌 구단이 챔피언스리그에 나가는 것에 부정적이다”라고 보도했습니다.
사우디 프로 리그는 원래 AFC(아시아축구연맹) 챔피언스리그에 나가야 합니다. 하지만 이들은 UEFA 챔피언스리그 진출 가능성을 확인하고 있습니다. 공교롭게도 2025-26시즌부터 UEFA 챔피언스리그 큰 변화가 있습니다. 총 36개 팀이 참가하는데 기존의 조별리그가 사라지고 4개 그룹으로 묶여 모든 팀들이 8번의 리그 경기를 치릅니다.
상위 8팀은 16강에 진출하고 남은 팀들이 플레이오프를 해서 16강 상대가 됩니다. 그 이후에는 16강, 8강, 4강, 결승까지 지금과 똑같이 진행이 됩니다. UEFA가 슈퍼리그 창설을 의식해서 인지는 모르겠지만 조별리그의 숫자를 늘리면서 처음부터 다양한 매치업을 기대하게 만들었습니다. 사우디 프로 리그는 이중 한 자리를 노리고 있습니다.
제가 봤을 때 가능성은 그리 높아 보이지는 않습니다. 재정적 페어플레이 규정이 UEFA는 있고 사우디는 없기 때문에 형평성에 맞지도 않죠. 그냥 사우디가 이런 것도 원하고 있구나, 야심이 참 대단하구나 이정도로만 알면 될 것 같습니다. 물론 사우디의 엄청난 자본력이 또 어떤 일들을 현실로 만들지는 알 수 없습니다. 축구계에서는 어떤 일이든 일어날 수 있죠.
만약 사우디 구단이 UEFA 챔피언스리그에 뛴다면 일단 경쟁력은 충분히 갖출 것 같습니다. 워낙유명한 선수들이 대거 합류했기 때문입니다. 알 나스르, 알 이티하드, 알 아흘리, 알 힐랄, 알 에티파크 등 일부 구단들은 현재 UEFA 챔피언스리그에 출전하는 팀들보다 더 화려한 라인업을 보유하고 있습니다. 알 아흘리는 마레즈, 피르미누, 생 막시맹이 스리톱을 보유하고 있습니다. 알 힐랄은 네이마르, 사비치, 쿨리발리, 네베스, 야신 부누 등 대단한 라인업을 갖고 있습니다. 알 나스르는 호날두와 마네, 브로조비치도 있죠. 이정도 전력이라면 UEFA 챔피언스리그에 나가도 경쟁력은 있을 것 같습니다.
